Cell Phone Phishing Scam

We have been informed today, May 26, 2010, that a few members were contact by cell phone with a message similar to this ” your debit card has been deactivated please press one”. This is a phishing scam DO NOT respond to it in any way.

Western Illinois Credit Union or any of its affiliates will never ask for any of your personal financial information. Again this is a phishing scam and for your protection do not respond to it.

If you have responded to it, please contact the credit union immediately at 309.298.2986.

SCAM Alert

On May 18th a Western Illinois Credit Union member brought in a letter and a check from “Customers Compensation Draw”. The letter claimed to be a notification of an award, also claimed to be the “final notice of winning”. The member being very aware and cautious asked one of our member service representatives if this notice was “too good to be true.” After reviewing the letter we noticed several grammatical errors and misspelled words. At the end of the letter, the following sentences state, and this is exactly what and how the statement was written: “A check of 3,980 has been sent to you to enable you to pay for the Government applicable taxes on your winning. The tax amount is 2,980dollars, Payable Through Western Union OR Money Gram.”

This member being alert and aware, saved herself $2,980 plus, this is definitely a scam. We are posting this as a warning to all our members that the skimmers and scammers are out there just waiting to ponce on unsuspecting, honest people. Please if it sounds too good to be true….it usually is. Don’t become a victim, protect yourself by being alert and aware.
